Capturing a first in the world
After an accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, Keith Thomas, 45, underwent surgery and months of lab work in hopes of restoring movement and sensation in his arm. Brian Donnelly filmed an interview with Keith and his sister (and caretaker) at their home days before his surgery, as well as BROLL capturing a day in the life.
Brian filmed the nine-hour surgery in February 2023, along with the twice-weekly lab sessions with the research team who invented this technology. These moments of progress, where the effects of the brain implants and overall surgery began to show effect, were at first small and fleeting — the twitch of a muscle in Keith’s forearm, or the extended range of a thumb and forefinger. Brian captured it all to tell this month’s long-journey, which will be life-long for Keith.
Brian is the ghost writer for the op-ed by Chad Bouton, professor in the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes, vice president of advanced engineering at Northwell Health, developer of the technology and principal investigator of the clinical trial.

New hope for liver cancer patients
Grady Hebert was successfully treated for colon cancer in 2021-2022. When it came back, it had spread to the liver and was deemed inoperable. But a New York surgeon specializing in the hepatic artery infusion (HAI) pump saved his life. Brian Donnelly filmed Grady’s surgery and followed the patient’s progress, producing this video and a slate of related content covering the topic of liver cancer treatments.
